UTICA — Jason Cooper, a lifelong Utica resident and father of two daughters in the Utica City School District, has announced his candidacy for the May 16 election for the district’s Board of Education.

“I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Utica School Board,” Cooper said. “I believe that collaboration, creative problem solving and a willingness to consider all ideas are essential for creating a strong, vibrant school system that benefits everyone. I am committed to working with the community to find innovative solutions to the challenges facing our schools and to promoting a culture of inclusivity and equity for all students.”

Cooper is a 1999 graduate of Proctor High School and received his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Brockport. He has volunteered as a New York State Legion baseball coach and is a parent volunteer at a local dance studio, in addition to serving as a co-director of the South Utica Neighborhood Association (SUNA). Cooper is also an active parent in the H.R. Jones Parent Teacher Association through event planning and execution, fundraising efforts and chaperoning field trips.

As a member of the Utica School Board, Cooper said he will bring a collaborative and creative approach to problem solving. He believes that by working together and considering all ideas, a strong, vibrant school system can be created that benefits everyone.

Cooper is committed to improving transparency in the Utica City School District. He said he believes that parents, teachers and community members have a right to know how the schools are performing and how their tax dollars are being spent. Cooper plans to work closely with school administrators to ensure that information about school policies, budgets and decision-making processes is easily accessible and transparent.

Focused on enhancing school safety and security, he understands that in order for students to learn and thrive, they must feel safe and supported. Cooper promises he will work to ensure that Utica schools have the resources and support they need to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.

“I know together, we can continue moving the Utica City School District in a positive direction, ensuring every student, teacher, parent and community member is as proud of this district as I am,” Cooper said.
