NEW HARTFORD — James E. Wilcox, 88, of New Hartford, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on April 24, 1934, in Utica, a son of Leo and Angeline (Lazot) Wilcox, and graduated from Utica Free Academy. Jim proudly served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958. He was employed with NY Telephone Company, later known as Nokia in Utica as a telephone technician, retiring in 1990. Jim was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the CWA Union.

He was a very loving husband, father, and doting grandfather (who never missed an opportunity to deliver a “zerbert”!) Jim adored the time spent with his family, especially taking camping trips up and down the east coast towards any campground with water where he could float for hours. Over the years, alongside his wife, Mary, they went on many cruises and made several wonderful friends. Jim’s true passion was working on old and new cars, doing bodywork, and repairing for family and friends. And he was a mean Pitch player!

Surviving are his wife, Mary, New Hartford; daughters, Christine (Ron) Critelli, Sauquoit and Catherine (John) Gamberoni, Richmond, MA; son, David (Ellen Rosenberg) Wilcox, Wynnewood, PA; grandchildren, Angela and Evan Critelli, Siena, Ava, and Tessa Gamberoni and Sam and Will Pitonyak; sister, Marilyn Keehle, Pittsford, NY; and several very loved, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Jean Koury and Patricia Cronin; and brother, Francis Wilcox.

Jim’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to Behr’s Homecare, especially Candace, Yvonne and Sasha and the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care for all their wonderful care and compassion.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, June 18, at 11 a.m. from Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Lourdes Campus officiated by Mary’s brother, Reverend John Croghan. The family will receive guests following the Mass. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date. Arrangements are with Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St., Sauquoit.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Jim’s name may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of New Hartford, https://hospicecareinc.org/donate-online or charity of your choice.
