There are many who are questioning the need to build a whole new YMCA rather than upgrading the current building. The most prevalent answer to this question appears to be the limited parking at the current location.
I have heard reports that the Rome Art and Community Center across the street has offered the use of their parking lot for YMCA members. Also, it seems that parking could be expanded along the front drive with a bit of reconfiguration. In addition there might be an opportunity to purchase some adjacent properties for parking expansion.
It is also true that a pool will be opening at the Utica YMCA; therefore, those patrons from the Utica area will more than likely utilize that pool instead of the one in Rome which will reduce the number of vehicles using the current parking lot.
In addition, an important concern of many of us who currently utilize the therapy pool here in Rome is the fact the proposed new building does not include a similar pool. Older people and people with disabilities, including the many children who currently use the therapy pool will be left out.
The current building does need some renovation. It seems it could be brought “up to par” for far less resources than what is being appropriated for a new facility and the question of what to do with current building would then be moot.
