Inmates injured during fights at Mohawk Correctional

Several inmates at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome’s outer district were injured during several large fights earlier this month.

Several inmate-on-inmate fights broke out during evening meal time on Sunday, May 10, according to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.

Authorities said corrections officers at the scene used pepper spray across several different fights to bring the scuffles to an end.

All of the inmates were removed from the scene and decontaminated. Officials said several inmates suffered minor injuries and were treated be medical staff.

Multiple inmates were placed in special housing units and are expected to face internal disciplinary charges, officials said.

Five makeshift sharpened weapons were also discovered after a search of the area, authorities said.

No staff members were injured, officials added.
