A Rome man was charged with escape Friday following an incident that occurred at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.
Scott A. Hence, 29, with an address given as Rome, was being treated at the Utica hospital when he pushed past county corrections officers assigned to watch him and forced his way out of the room, Oneida County Sheriff’s officials said.
Hence was not restrained because he had asked to use the restroom, deputies said. After making his way down a set of stairs, Hence was able to get out of the hospital with the officers chasing him on foot. After exiting the hospital, Hence was placed back in custody by the two officers a short distance away, after a brief struggle, deputies said.
An arrest warrant was issued against Hence on the charge of first-degree escape, a class D felony. He remains in the custody of the sheriff’s office and will appear in court.
