WHITESTOWN — A 28-year-old man is accused of attacking corrections officers and grabbing their stun gun at the Oneida County jail Friday morning, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies said correctional officers entered the cell of inmate Melvin Cruz-Raison, of Rome, Friday morning in order to escort him to the medical unit. Deputies said Cruz-Raison immediately attacked the officers and grabbed one of their electric stun guns from its holster, which he pointed at the officers.

The corrections officers were able to disarm Cruz-Raison before he could fire the weapon and he was detained. One of the corrections officers was taken to a local hospital for an injury he sustained in the fight, authorities stated.

Cruz-Raison is charged with second-degree assault, third-degree possession of a weapon and first-degree menacing, all felonies, authorities said. He is scheduled to appear in Whitestown Court.

Cruz-Raison had been in the jail since Dec. 13 due to ongoing mischief, menacing and resisting arrest charges from incidents in Rome.

Authorities said on Nov. 14, Cruz-Raison became combative while at Rome Health and damaged a door to a nurses station. Then on Dec. 9, authorities said Cruz-Raison poured hot coffee on another man's head at the Rome Rescue Mission, after he had been barred from the mission. Authorities said Cruz-Raison was back at Rome Health on Dec. 10 where he broke a sink and then threatened responding police officers with a piece of broken metal.

These previous cases remain ongoing in Rome City Court.
