Incident wasn’t gunfire, Oneida police say, but a firecracker
ONEIDA — A report of a possible gunshot near a playground on Franklin Street in Oneida Sunday night was determined to just be a firecracker, according to the Oneida Police Department.
Police said they were dispatched to the playground on Franklin Street near Belmont Avenue at about 9:18 p.m. Sunday for a report that an unknown male had ridden up on a bicycle and fired a handgun in the direction of several youths on the playground. Police said the youths went home and told their parents, prompting the call to 911.
The area was searched and no evidence of a gunshot were discovered, police said. An interview with neighbors and witnesses revealed that no one saw a handgun, police said, and people suspected the man may have thrown a firework from his bicycle.
Police said they also reviewed security camera footage of the incident, and that showed the male riding by the park on the bicycle, with no evidence that he had stopped and brandished a firearm. Police said the video also showed the youths casually leaving the playground.
“There is no evidence that the public was in any immediate danger, therefore a public alert was not necessary,” police officials said. “It also appears that the ‘bang’ heard by the youth was from a pyrotechnic device, and not a firearm.”
No criminal charges were filed and no one was hurt.
