‘If Tombstones Could Talk;’ Madison County cemetery tours return

The Madison County Historian’s Office will once again be working with local cemeteries, historical institutions, and libraries to present two “If Tombstones Could Talk” cemetery tours this fall.

The first tour will take place Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Canastota on Mount Pleasant Drive. Tours will leave at 10:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 11:30 a.m., and will run approximately 45 minutes.

Attendees will hear stories of a Civil War veteran, one of the earliest female principals in Canastota, an early optician, and more. Admission to the event is $5 for adults and children under 12 are free. Admission can be purchased on the day of the event. All proceeds will be split between the Canastota Canal Town Museum, the Canastota Public Library, and the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a canned good to donate for the Canastota Library Canned Food Drive to benefit the Opportunity Shop in Canastota.

The second tour will take place Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Madison Village Cemetery in the Village of Madison on South Street. Tours will leave at 10:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. and will run approximately 35 minutes.

Admission to the event is $5 for adults and children under 12 are free. Admission can be purchased the day of the event. All proceeds will be split between the Town of Madison Historical Society and the Madison Village Cemetery. For more information, call the Madison County Historian’s Office at 315-366-2453.
