Orlando Cross of Holland Patent was named to the first team offensive line as part of the all-state football team listed on the New York State Sportswriters’ Association web site.
The small school all-state selections were announced this week, and the large school picks are scheduled to be announced next week.
A number of other ares players were named to the second and third teams as well as getting honorable mentions.
Cross transferred from Proctor High of Utica for his senior year, and anchored the Golden Knights’ offensive line at center.
He also helped shut down opposing offenses at defensive tackle.
Holland Patent finished ranked seventh in the NYSSWA state rankings in Class C with a 10-1 record and a Section III Class C title.
The team’s only loss came to eventual state champion Susquehanna Valley in the regional finals.
HP’s Jason Haas was selected to the second team at running back.
Josh Ernst was named as the third team kicker.
Quarterback Nick Herringshaw and kick returner Griffin Briggs were given honorable mention status.
In Class B, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill quarterback Alex Oliver was named as the fourth-team all-purpose player.
Teammates Travis Decker (wide receiver) and Matt Ciotti (linebacker) were honorable mentions.
The NYSSWA also selected an all-state team in eight-man football for the first time.
Oriskany quarterback Matt Enos was named to the team, as were South Lewis running back-receiver Andrew Hoffman and running back-linebacker Brady Vosburgh.
