The Holland Patent football team got a long touchdown pass from Mike Benedetto to Dylan Ernst with 9:40 left in the game Saturday to win a back-and-forth battle at home against Canastota 32-29.
Holland Patent, which is playing home games at Whitesboro this spring, gave up a 20-yard touchdown run by Devin Youker just over two minutes into the game to fall behind 7-0. But they responded with the next three scores.
In the second quarter, HP got a 2-yard run from Benedetto to make it 7-6. Then Benedetto hit Maddox Williams for a 41-yard touchdown pass. A two-point conversion run by Jordan Koenig gave HP a 14-7 lead. Bryce Dare’s 1-yard run in the third quarter pushed their lead to 20-7. But Canastota responded immediately with a 62-yard touchdown run by Youker to retake the lead at 21-20.
Dare would get a 56-yard touchdown run as the last score of the third quarter to take the lead back at 26-21.
In the fourth, Youker ran in a fourth touchdown, this time from three yards out. A two-point conversion made it 29-26 Canastota.
HP got the last score, this one good for a three-point lead at 32-29, when Benedetto hit Ernst for a 53-yard scoring strike through the air.
Benedetto was 7-for-9 passing for 158 yards and the two scores. Dare ran 15 times for 136 yards and two scores. Ernst led the team in receiving with three catches for 88 yards and the score.
Defensively for HP, Dare led the team with seven tackles.
HP improved to 2-0 on the season. The Knights travel to Rome to play Rome Free Academy at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Canastota falls to 1-2. The team’s next game is at home at 3 p.m. Saturday against Oneida.
Clinton scores late to win
Clinton scored a fourth quarter touchdown to get a 12-8 win over Notre Dame Saturday at home.
Kole Davignon led Clinton with 3-for-7 passing for 50 yards and a passing touchdown. He also ran 16 times for 113 yards and a rushing score.
Rico Lucio had two catches for 33 yards for Clinton, including a score. Aiden Walter had 16 rushes for 106 yards and a catch for 17.
The score was 8-6 Notre Dame after a quarter.
Clinton is 2-0 now and will play at Westmoreland-Oriskany at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Camden gets shut out
The Camden Blue Devils lost 35-0 to New Hartford Saturday at home.
No statistics were available.
Camden fell to 0-2. The team will play at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill at 2 p.m. Saturday.
