Holland Patent retired teachers award grants to trio of current teachers

HOLLAND PATENT — As experienced educators, The Holland Patent Retired Teachers Association recognizes that many of the materials and activities teachers present to their students may not be covered by school budgets.

The typical educator voluntarily takes on numerous out-of-pocket expenses throughout their careers for the benefit of their students’ learning, the association said in an announcement, adding that because of this, the HPRTA has established an educational grant program in 2018 to help current Holland Patent Teachers Association educators provide extra motivational and curriculum-related materials to their students that they would otherwise not be able to acquire.

These grants may also be used to help defray the cost of attending workshops and conferences that would support the professional growth and expand the skills of HPTA educators, which might not be funded by the school district.

This year, the HPRTA awarded three educational grants of $100 each to Holland Patent educators Bethany Colenzo, grades 4-12 vocal music teacher, to Lexi Hansen, high school French teacher, and to Ashley Rose, grades 3-5 social worker.

Colenzo applied for funds to purchase motivational materials for use in an incentive program targeting good behavior and on-task work ethic.

Hansen is purchasing authentic Mardi Gras materials to support learning about Francophone culture.

Rose used her grant money for materials that promote a positive school climate for students, faculty and staff.

“We commend these educators for their ongoing efforts to help Holland Patent Central School students become successful, lifelong learners and responsible school citizens,” the announcement added.
