Historic Trenton Falls hiking trails not open

TRENTON — The Trenton Falls Scenic Trails will not be open to the public this weekend, according to a town official. The trails had been scheduled to be open on Saturday and Sunday, but the event has been canceled due to a lack of volunteers.

The falls are typically made available to the public two weekends per year — once in the spring and again in the fall, giving visitors a rare chance to see the falls. In 1863, U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward hosted a meeting of diplomats at the Trenton Falls Hotel and used the falls to emphasize the strength of the North, and to discourage foreign support for the South during the Civil War.
