Highway garage, vehicles destroyed in fire

TOWN OF RUSSIA — The Town of Russia Highway Garage and several vehicles inside were destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon.

Fire officials said a passerby called 9-1-1 after discovering the fire in Herkimer County at about 4:24 p.m. Multiple volunteer departments responded from Oneida and Herkimer counties and launched an exterior attack on the town barn, which is located on Route 365 near Wheelertown Road, officials said.

Water was tankered to the scene from a hydrant on Fairchild Road.

No one is believed to have been injured. Officials said volunteers fought the fire and conducted initial overhaul of the building for about three hours. Crews returned to service later Wednesday night.

At least three town vehicles were destroyed in the fire, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

The Remsen, Barneveld, Poland and Floyd fire departments responded, with Holland Patent and Newport on standby.
