UTICA — A former Ilion man has been sentenced to more than two years in federal prison after he fled New York for South Carolina, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Eric L. Henderson, 38, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge David N. Hurd in Utica on Thursday to 30 months in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, for failing to update his sex offender registration after leaving New York, according to prosecutors.

Authorities said Henderson sexually assaulted a 15-year-old in Herkimer County and was convicted in 2020 of third-degree rape. Henderson was sentenced to state prison and was eventually released on parole in May 2021.

Following his release from prison, authorities said Henderson cut contact with his parole officer and fled to South Carolina. Authorities said Henderson did not update his sex offender registration in either New York or South Carolina. He was located and taken into custody in October by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force and was returned to New York.
