HERKIMER — Herkimer County Community College held its 55th commencement May 12 in the Physical Education building. There were 371 graduates and candidates for degrees and certificates eligible to participate.

Herkimer College Trustee Isabella Crandall presided over the ceremony. The National Anthem was sung by Joshua Lanza ‘12, academic support specialist and esports coach at Herkimer College; and signed by Madison Campagna, a 2023 graduate from Mohawk.

The invocation and benediction were delivered by the Very Reverend Sean P. O’Brien, V.F. ’85, of St. Peter’s Church in Rome. The procession was led by faculty representative and macebearer, Professor Karen Jones ‘93, P.T., D.P.T.

Student Government Association President Kyle K. Poulos ‘23, of Niagara Falls; Herkimer County Legislative Chair Vincent J. Bono; New York State Assemblymember Robert J. Smullen and Herkimer College Academic Senate Secretary Jeffrey Steele ’90 delivered greetings.

Jessica M. Marshall ’23, of Castleton delivered her student address titled, “Destinations.”

“At times I have run some stop signs, like taking more classes than I should have one semester,” Marshall shared. “I’ve misplaced the keys and found them again, changing from one major to another trying to see which one fits. But miraculously I have reached my proper destination, and how lucky am I to reach it with all of you.”

Jahiem Donell Barber ’23 of Utica also delivered a student address titled, “The Road to Success.”

“Follow your dreams and don’t let anybody tell you differently,” Barber advised his fellow classmates. “Remember this quote, ‘Be yourself, because originals are worth more than copies.’ Don’t sit around trying to be like everyone else, be your authentic self.”

Degrees were conferred by President Cathleen C. McColgin with assistance from Provost Michael Oriolo and Dean of Students/Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher.
