Patrolman Matthew Heinrich is the Rome Police Department’s Officer of the Month for October.
Department officials said Heinrich was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident outside Smokers Choice on Black River Boulevard at about 1:45 a.m. Oct. 11, when he came upon a man leaving the store. Police said the man — Colby Kramer — had broken into the store and was attempting to flee when Heinrich grabbed him and took him into custody.
Police said roughly $600 worth of stolen merchandise was found in Kramer’s vehicle and scattered on the ground. According to court officials, Kramer has since been indicted by a grand jury on one charge of third-degree burglary. He is scheduled to appear in County Court on Dec. 3.
Heinrich is also being honored for his attention to duty and his proactive approach to vehicle and traffic stops, as well as his interactions with the community, officials said. Heinrich joined the force in May 2018.
