Halloween Horror Double Feature showcases Universal monsters
ROME — The Capitol Theatre, 230 West Dominick St., is hosting its annual Halloween Horror Double Feature at 2:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.
This year will showcase the classic Universal monsters, in the digital presentations of black and white favorites “House of Frankenstein” from 1944 (71 minutes) and “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” from 1948 (83 minutes).
“House of Frankenstein” stars Boris Karloff as a mad doctor who brings Dracula (John Carradine) back to life and also meets up with Frankenstein’s monster (Glenn Strange) and the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney, Jr.) in his travels.
Erle C. Kenton directed the film and the cast also includes J. Carrol Naish, Eleana Verdugo and horror icons Lionel Atwill and George Zucco.
The last of Universal’s monster epics was the perfect blend of comedy and horror in “Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein.” The comic team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello are delivery agents who receive a pair of crates with Dracula (Bela Lugosi) and the Frankenstein monster (Glenn Strange) inside.
Meanwhile, the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney, Jr.), tries to stop them from making their delivery to McDougal’s House of Horrors. Directed by Charles Lamont, the monsters in the cast all play their characters straight in contrast to Abbott and Costello’s shenanigans.
Tickets are $3-$7. For more information and advance sale tickets, visit www.romecapitol.com.
