TOWN OF BROOKFIELD — A Madison County teenager has been charged with falsely reporting an incident after law enforcers said he accidentally shot himself in the leg and then lied about it.

Sheriff’s deputies said Tyler L. Wood, 18, of Route 8, called 9-1-1 at 4:36 p.m. Monday and told dispatchers that he had returned home and had been shot by an unknown assailant.

According to the sheriff’s deputies, Wood told dispatchers that he did not know the shooter and had an injury to his leg.

Rescue personnel responded and Wood was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for the gunshot wound.

When interviewed by investigators, deputies said Wood came clean and admitted to accidentally shooting himself and making up the story about the unknown gunman.

Wood is charged with one count each of third-degree falsely reporting an incident, a misdemeanor, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a residence, authorities said. He is scheduled to appear in Town Court on Nov. 10.
