UTICA — The gunman who took his own life after shooting a woman at Fred's Dari-Del in Utica on Thursday has been identified as a 27-year-old New York City man, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said Jakwon Ramos shot the woman in the midsection at about 1:30 p.m. at the convenience store at the corner of Noyes and York streets, on the city's west side. Police and rescue personnel were called to the scene and rushed the woman to the St. Elizabeth Campus of the Mohawk Valley Health System for emergency surgery.

The woman was last listed in critical but stable condition, having survived her surgery, according to Utica Police on Friday.

Authorities were told that Ramos was still inside the building, and had potentially shot himself. Officers established a perimeter around the store and attempted to speak with Ramos from outside.

After 3 p.m., the Herkimer Police Department assisted on the scene with a robotic vehicle that was used to enter the store. The Oneida County Metro SWAT team also used a drone to look inside. The surveillance found Ramos on the ground, unresponsive at the back of the store, authorities stated.

Once it appeared safe, officers said they entered the store and found Ramos dead, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing into what led up to the shooting and any potential motive behind the encounter.

Due to the potentially dangerous nature of the incident, authorities said two nearby Utica City Schools were placed on lockout, and they were on a delayed release.
