Gun buyback event in Rome on Saturday
ROME — A gun buy-back community event will be held in Rome on Saturday, Oct. 22, hosted by the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church at 1807 Bedford St.
People will receive $300 for assault weapons, $150 for handguns, $75 for rifles and shotguns and $25 for non-working and antique firearms, officials said.
All payments will be made via prepaid gift cards at the site, after the guns are turned over.
Anyone trading in homemade or 3D-printed guns or parts can receive up to $25.
The AG’s Office will be more discerning with 3D-printed parts in Rome after an anonymous person received $21,000 in gift cards at a gun buyback event in Utica.
The Utica event was offering an extra $100 for ghost gun parts, and the anonymous person claims they drove from West Virginia to Utica with a pile of 3D-printed parts they had made at home, according to reports.
For the Rome event and all future events, the buyback personnel will have more discretion, and all 3D-printed guns must be capable of being fired more than once, officials stated.
Guns must be unloaded when they are dropped off. If bringing a firearm in your vehicle, officials said it must be placed in the trunk.
All guns should be in a box or bag when dropped off.
Officials said this is an amnesty program and no questions will be asked of the people dropping off the guns. Identification is not required.
The event is not open to licensed gun dealers and active or retired law enforcement officers.
