Great Swamp hosts Fall Migration Festival Saturday

CANASTOTA — The Great Swamp Conservancy’s 20th annual Fall Migration Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at 8375 N. Main Street.

Celebrating the Great Swamp’s 25th anniversary and the miracle of migration, many activities will revolve around Page’s Live Birds of Prey show, Wildlife Rockstars meet and greet, Onondaga Audubon Society, the state Bluebird Society, wildlife artists, crafters — including pottery, bird houses, wool/spinner, jewelry, tie dyed clothing and accessories and a well-traveled photographer and author — will also be part of the event. And folk singer Tim Herron will perform.

Weather dependent activities are: Airborne Adventures Balloon Walk, horse rides by Maple Hedge Farm and tractor/wagon rides to the Anne V. Pickard Overlook in search of migratory birds. The children’s nature crafts and games will be in the back event area. The chicken barbecue starts at 11 a.m. and held until gone, and the Lady Bug Café will be open for hot dogs, hamburgers and snacks.

Guests may take a chance at the Basket Extravaganza with raffle drawings at 3 p.m. The Great Swamp gift shop will have an array of T-shirts and décor to purchase. Other exhibits and displays to visit include: Atlantic Salmon Club, Madison County Solid Waste, Oneida County Master Gardener, GSC Bird Talk, GSC’s Natural Garden, and Cattail houses.

To celebrate the GSC’s 25th anniversary, a special treat will be served at 12:30 p.m. Admission is $4; children ages 12 and under $1; and $10 maximum for families.
