Government offices among Thanksgiving Day closures


Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The holiday originated as a harvest festival by the Pilgrims in 1621. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1862 with President Abraham Lincoln proclaiming a national day of “Thanksgiving” during the Civil War. Here’s a look at what’s closed on Thursday:

Mail Delivery

There will be no mail delivery pickup on Thursday.

Stocks and financial centers

The Federal Reserve Bank, and all of its offices and branches, are closed. Private banks are closed on Thursday as are the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.

Government offices

Almost all federal, state and local government offices are closed — that includes the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security offices, the Department of Social Services, etc. Many government operations, including state motor vehicles or federal Social Security business, however, can be conducted online 24/7, 365-days per year. Most municipal offices are also closed on Friday.

Some municipal buildings in the region remain closed to walk-in traffic because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Call your local municipal offices for their policies or to see if an appointment is necessary.

• The police departments will be open and ready for business as crime doesn’t take Thanksgiving Day off. Likewise other first responders, including firefighters and emergency medical technicians, will also be on the job.

City of Rome

All city of Rome offices are still closed due to the public due to COVID-19. The Rome office will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Contact the office by phone at 315-339-7659 after the holiday for more information.

City of Oneida

All city of Oneida offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

City of Oneida offices will also close at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The Oneida City Court will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26, for the Thanksgiving holiday. The court will be open on Friday.


Centro buses won’t run on Thursday; they will be back on the streets on Friday.

Rome trash pickup

The city’s trash hauler will not collect trash on Thursday. Trash pickup on Thursday’s route will be collected on Friday; Friday’s route will be collected on Saturday.

Rome green waste

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, Thursday’s curb-side pickup of containerized green waste will be delayed one day. The city will pick up that area up on Friday. For Tuesday and Wednesday, containerized green waste pick-up remains on the regular schedule.
