CANASTOTA — The Canastota Public Library and the Canaltown Museum are sponsoring a Canalside Talk at the library, 102 W. Center St., on Tuesday, Sept 27, at 6:30 p.m.

Norman Dann, professor emeritus at SUNY Morrisville will answer the age-old question- “Gerrit Smith: Nuts or Not?” Smith biographer, Dann, will offer information on Gerrit Smith’s mental health.

Smith was one of the “Secret Six” that funded John Browns raid on Harpers Ferry. After the failed raid and Brown’s capture in October of 1857, Smith had a mental breakdown and was confined to an insane asylum for a period of time.

Dann is the head docent at the Gerrit Smith Estate, a founder of the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum and the author of books about Peterboro and the Smith Family.

“Gerrit Smith: Nuts or Not?” will last about an hour and will be followed by a short question and answer period. The presentation will take place on the second floor of the library.
