NORTH BAY — A storage garage and multiple vehicles — including two 30-foot recreational vehicles — were destroyed by fire on Stone Barn Road Monday afternoon, according to the North Bay Fire Department.

Nobody was hurt in the fire. Thick black smoke could be seen for miles around as the two-story garage burned.

North Bay Fire Chief Joseph Matthews said the homeowner discovered the fire at 1459 Stone Barn Road and called 911 shortly after 4 p.m. Monday. The property is located on the north side of Oneida Lake, near the border with Oswego County.

"The whole building was fully engulfed in flames," Matthews described. He said he lives a short distance from the scene of the fire, and the building was fully involved by the time he arrived.

Upwards of 50 volunteers from seven area departments — including 21 from North Bay — responded to the scene and launched an exterior attack, the chief said. Water was pumped from a nearby pond.

"Basically, it's a defensive attack," Matthews said. "You're not going inside the structure."

From the outside, Chief Matthews said the firefighters were able to get the flames under control in about 45 minutes to one hour. The garage was a wood frame structure.

The garage contained several ATVs, one car, tools and other items, with a second car, two 30-foot RVs and a boat parked around the building, the chief said. All vehicles were destroyed, including the 22-foot-long, aluminum fiberglass boat.

"Water doesn't work on fiberglass," the chief said. "It was a challenge."

The firefighters used four to five dry chemical extinguishers to douse the boat fire, and foam concentrate on the RVs because of the gasoline, the chief explained.

"There was minor damage to the siding on the home. The intensity of the heat melted the siding," Chief Matthews said. The residence was located about 75 yards away from the burning garage.

"We were able to get there quick and save the home," Matthews stated.

No residents or firefighters were hurt during the blaze, the chief said, adding that the homeowner is insured for the damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The North Bay, Taberg, Cleveland, Sylvan Beach, Vienna, Camden and McConnellsville fire departments responded to the scene.
