GAIF to host Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day celebration

UTICA — The Great American Irish Festival (GAIF) and Irish Cultural Center are co-sponsoring four days of activities this Thursday through Sunday, Sept.15-18, to celebrate Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day.

The events:

• Irish comedian Kevin Flynn will perform in the Event Center of the Irish Cultural Center, 623 Columbia St., on Thursday at 7 p.m. Flynn is an award-winning actor, writer, producer, host and stand up comedian.

He can be seen as The Wedding Coordinator in “The Heartbreak Kid” with Ben Stiller; “Me, Myself and Irene” with Jim Carrey; “Osmosis Jones” with Bill Murray; and as Charlotte’s Boyfriend in HBO’s “Sex and the City.” Flynn is also the founder and executive director of the Nantucket Comedy Festival.

Tickets may be obtained in advance through Eventbrite for $30 or at the ICC door $35.

• The Byrne Brothers will perform at the Event Center of the ICC at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16. Cost is $25 in advance with tickets available through Eventbrite or at the ICC, or at the door that evening for the price of $30.

The Byrne Brothers are a multi award-winning family band and Irish dancers from Dublin and one of the biggest names in traditional Irish music today. They are Luca (age 18) on accordion, Finn (age 16) on banjo, mandolin and guitar, Dempsey (age 12) on bodhran and whistle, and Dad Tommy on uilleann pipes, bagpipes, fiddle and guitar. They regularly perform at Walt Disney World’s Raglan Road Irish Pub.

The Byrne Brothers will also perform outdoors on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the new Biergarten of Matt’s Brewery on Varick Street. They will play from 3-4:30 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 18 there will be the weekly Irish Brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by bingo.
