ROME — Smooth Jazz Trio, featuring Rick Compton and friends, will perform at Franca’s Wine Room, 260 W. Dominick St., from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

Smooth Jazz Trio includes Compton on flugelhorn, conga and percussion, with Jim O’Mahoney on piano and Joe Karwacki on bass.

Throughout his career, Compton has backed many iconic players that include Carmen Caramanica, “Doc” Woods, Sal Amico, “Chick” Esposito, Rick Montalbano, Sal Alberico Jr. and more. He’s also performed with jazz greats like Nick Brignola, Marian McPartland, “Slam” Stewart, Gary Burton, Marvin Stamm, Harry “Sweets” Edison and Chuck Mangione.

O’Mahoney has been a constant presence on the local music scene, known for his wide variety of styles. In addition to appearing as sideman or leader on piano with several of the area’s well-known jazz musicians, he teaches piano and guitar, giving lessons in the Utica and Oneida areas.

Karwacki, a graduate of Ithaca College School of Music, has performed in jazz venues from night clubs and concert stages. He plays everything from duos to big bands and orchestras. Karwacki is also known to have worked alongside legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Al Martino and Barry Manilow.
