VERONA — Four Vernon-Verona-Sherrill school district teams earned honors at recent local robotics competitions, and two of them moved on to championship rounds, the VVS district announced. Among the results:
• VVS Middle School students competed in the CNY Vex IQ Robotics Competition at the Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) in Syracuse.
The team, consisting of students Logan Fisher, Joe Ingalls, and Jack Bailey plus advisor Micah Colbert, placed second among 38 teams, which qualified them for the Northern New York State Championship Tournament in March at the MOST.
• VVS students from all three elementary schools participated in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Lego League Into Orbit competition at SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
The Sherrill Shark-o-Bots, led by Ralph Marsello, received the Rising Star Award, while the Vernon Dream Machine, led by John Protheroe, received first place for Best Research.
The Verona Vipers, led by Matt Bonville, advanced to a championship event in late January, taking home the Gracious
VVS alumna Alex Burger last year helped develop robotics teams as a part of her senior project. Her father, Andrew
Burger, is now a mentor to the district and assists with everything from registration to competitions, the district noted.
District Superintendent Martha Group said “we appreciate Alex helping bring the robotics program to a new level in the VVS district through her senior project. Her attention to detail and commitment to the sustainability of the program is evidenced by the continued participation and success of our students.”
She added that Andrew Burger and FIRST have “allowed us to expand and continue these opportunities for students well into the future. We are grateful for his assistance in working with our administrators, coaches, students, and SUNY Poly on this exciting program.”
