Four students race away with Boilermaker scholarships
UTICA — The 2022 Boilermaker Road Race Ted Petrillo Scholarship was given to four local high school seniors who have shown outstanding achievement and commitment in distance running.
The Boilermaker Road Race annually awards scholarships to both male and female graduating high school runners in the categories of Outstanding Achievement in Distance Running and Outstanding Commitment to Distance Running.
Outstanding Achievement in Distance Running
Elizabeth Lucason — Camden Central School, Camden, NY.
Lucason’s achievements in distance running include winning the 2021 NYS Championship Sportsman Award and holding multiple school records in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Her best Boilermaker 5K time is 18:47.
Lucason has committed to attend Milligan University in Milligan, TN.
Colton Kempney — Beaver River Central School, Beaver Falls, NY.
Kempney’s achievements in distance running include winning multiple accolades and being named Frontier League All Star in Cross Country and Frontier League All Star in Track. His best Boilermaker 15K time is 56:07.
Kempney has committed to attend Furman University in Greenville, SC.
Outstanding Commitment to Distance Running
Lexi Bernard —South Lewis Central School, Turin, NY.
Bernard’s achievements in distance running include winning the Section III Cross Country Sportsmanship Award, being named Section III Cross Country Champion and Section III Champion (1500m) Track. Her best Boilermaker 5K time is 18:53, placing as the First Overall Female in 2019.
Bernard is the class valedictorian at South Lewis Central School and she has committed to attend the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, NY.
Richard Zielenski — Holland Patent Central School, Holland Patent, NY.
Zielenski’s achievements in distance running include being the team captain for his school’s cross country team, being named the Center State Conference All Star and Holland Patent’s Most Outstanding Fall Athlete. His best Boilermaker 15K time is 57:42.
Zielenski has committed to attend Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY.
