The Fort Stanwix Chapter of the National Organization of Daughters of the American Revolution has announced its annual Flag Essay contest is under way. ‘
Students in grades five and six in the Rome, Oriskany, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Westmoreland districts are eligible to enter. The title, What the Flag of the United States Means to Me, gives students the opportunity to offer their opinions, along with whatever facts they find in their research, as they write their ideas, the announcement said. Teachers in those districts have been sent the essay contest rules to share with students.
Monetary prizes — of $100, $75 and $50 — will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners. The contest deadline is March 12. Students can give their essays to their teacher or email them, depending on whether they are in an in-class or remote situation.
Their teachers have the information for mailing them by the closing date, the Fort Stanwix Chapter said.
