UTICA — There was a connection to Utica in Friday’s NHL draft.

Former Utica Junior Comets National Collegiate Development Conference team goalie Cameron Whitehead was drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights in the fourth round of the NHL draft, which was taking place in Montreal, Quebec. He was the 128th overall pick.

Heading into the draft, the Ontario native was ranked seventh among goaltenders in North America.

Whitehead, a 19-year-old Northeastern University recruit, played one junior Tier II season for the Jr. Comets during 2019-20. He appeared in 29 games with the Jr. Comets finishing with a 3.40 goals-against average and an .896 save percentage with one shutout and an 11-12-3 record. He also appeared in two playoff games with the Jr. Comets.

Whitehead also took insight from team president and former NHL goalie Rob Esche during his time with the Jr. Comets.

Last season, he played with the Lincoln Stars in the Tier I junior US Hockey League when he had a 3.19 goals-against average with a .892 save percentage and 16-8-4 record.
