The former Rome Catholic School (RCS) facility at 800 Cypress St. is back on the market for sale at a price of $1.2 million, as the Rome school district concludes its 27-month lease of the site for usage by Strough Middle School students.
The price is included in a listing of the approximately 64,930-square-foot building and accompanying 15 acres at pyramid brokerage.com online.
The site, owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, also could be available for another lease, but “a sale is preferred,” Syracuse Diocese Superintendent of Catholic Schools William Crist said Friday.
The Diocese does not anticipate a further need for the property, said Crist. He commented “we’re happy” with the current smaller RCS location at the former St. Peter’s school at 400 Floyd Ave., adding “we want to grow that.” While it “would be a great problem” to have if the RCS enrollment “outgrew St. Peter’s” and a larger site again were needed, he said, that is not expected and the former St. Peter’s building has “been wonderful for us.”
As for the 800 Cypress St. site, it had opened in 1963 as Rome Catholic High School, but consolidations due to declining enrollment later led to it becoming a pre-K to grade 12 facility. Further changes followed in fall 2013 when it began hosting pre-K to grade 6 as Catholic high school programs for Rome were shifted to the Notre Dame school of Utica. RCS ceased using the site entirely after the 2015-16 school year, moving to the Floyd Avenue location.
The Rome school district has been leasing the former RCS site at Cypress Street for usage by Strough students while Strough’s 801 Laurel St. building underwent a two-year renovation. That project is nearing completion, and students are to resume using the Laurel Street facility for the new school year that begins Sept. 6.
A sign marketing the Cypress Street property had been put up there before the lease agreement was reached with the Rome school district, Crist noted. Now that the school district is no longer in need of the site, the display of the sign has been resumed, he explained.
The pyramid brokerage.com listing says the property has a “high level of potential for school use or redevelopment (medical/office or residential).” Crist said there have been “a couple of inquiries” about the site including one that could be “kind of a unique adaptation” of the building, plus “we’ve been contacted by some start-ups” for business ventures.
