Floyd residents urged to protect pipes

With an arctic blast set to descend on the region over the next several days, Floyd Water Superintendent Michelle Kotary is urging town residents to take precautions to keep their pipes from freezing.

Among the steps people can take, officials say, include: leaving water trickling from faucets; leaving cabinet doors open to allow heat to circulate around pipes, supervised use of a space heater to warm areas where pipes may be subject to the cold.

“We can’t stress it enough to people” that they need to take precautions because of the extreme cold, Kotary said, adding that failure to address problems before they happen can lead to expensive damage such as broken pipes.
