Floyd man charged with felony weapons possession following 11-hour standoff
FLOYD — A 45-year-old man has been charged with felony weapons possession after pointing a BB gun at a sheriff's deputy, leading to an 11-hour standoff, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's deputies said they were dispatched to 7522 Camroden Road around 10:45 p.m. Sunday for a loud music complaint. The responding deputy could hear the music and could see 45-year-old James G. Damuth through a glass door, sitting inside his residence, authorities stated.
The deputy continued to knock at the glass door in an attempt to identify himself and get Damuth's attention, and he also shined a flashlight at Damuth.
Damuth then turned towards the deputy and pulled out what appeared to be a black handgun, pointing it at the deputy through the glass door, authorities said.
The deputy retreated and called in back-up. A perimeter was established around the residence, with negotiators brought in to speak to Damuth. Authorities said the standoff lasted roughly 11 hours before Damuth peacefully surrounded shortly before 9:30 a.m. Monday.
A search warrant was secured for the residence and a BB gun was the only weapon found inside, deputies stated.
Damuth is charged with one count of third-degree possession of a weapon, a class D felony, authorities said. He is scheduled to appear in court.
The investigation remains ongoing and authorities said additional charges are possible.
