DIANA — A 60-year-old Florida man was killed after his four-wheeler crashed off Lake Bonaparte in Lewis County Monday night, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies said Patrick Byrne, of Florida, was riding an ATV at a high rate of speed along North Shore Road at about 9:22 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, when he lost control due to the speed and the slippery, rain-soaked pavement. Deputies said the ATV went off the roadway, bounced off an embankment, rolled back across the pavement and went off the opposite side of the road.

Byrne was ejected from the ATV and suffered serious injuries, authorities said. He was rushed to Carthage Area Hospital in Jefferson County and died as a result of his injuries shortly after arrival, deputies stated. He was wearing a helmet.

The crash remains under investigation.
