Five-run sixth inning lifts Westmoreland over visiting Clinton on diamond

Westmoreland put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase Clinton’s one-run lead and win 9-5 Wednesday at home in a non-league game.

Westmoreland scored a run in the first and another in the second to lead 2-0 but Clinton tied it in the fourth. The Bulldogs scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning to lead 4-2. The Warriors then scored three more in the fifth to take their first lead at 5-4.

Caleb Miller started for Westmoreland and went five innings but left with a no decision. He allowed five runs, two of them earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts. Josh Suber got the win in relief, throwing two innings without allowing a run. He allowed a hit and walked two.

Clinton’s Kyle Majka also started and went five innings for a no decision. He allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits while striking out 11. Cameron Maline took the loss in relief, tossing an inning and allowing five runs, three of them earned. He gave up three hits and walked two with a strikeout.

Westmoreland’s offense was led by Owen Davison with three hits, two runs batter in and a stolen base. Anthony Sawanec had two hits, two RBIs, a run and a stolen base. Miller singled, doubled, scored twice, drove in one and stole two bases. Mike Scalise singled, doubled, scored and swiped a base. Mitchell Holmes singled, doubled, scored and drove in one.

Clinton’s Matthew King had a single and double. Aiden Soika singled, scored and stole two bases.

Westmoreland improves to 2-0 and will travel for a Center State Conference game at West Canada Valley at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Clinton, 1-1, is at Oriskany at 4:30 p.m. on April 18 in non-league play.

NY Mills’ offensive outburst topples Oriskany

The New York Mills baseball team had four- and six-run innings to power the Marauders to a 14-6 win on the road Wednesday in the Center State.

Oriskany came out with six runs over the first three innings but then went cold. Meanwhile the visitors’ bats came alive, with four in the third then six in the fourth to take a 10-6 lead. They added one in the fifth and three in the sixth to cement the win.

Statistics for New York Mills were not submitted.

For Oriskany, Karsten Bates had two hits and two runs batted in with a run scored. Anthony Kernan had two hits, a run and an RBI. Ty Zizzi also had two hits and a run.

Oriskany had four pitchers take the mound. Alex Burrows went 1 2/3 innings and allowed three runs, two of them earned. He gave u a hit and two walks with a strikeout. Kernan three three innings, allowing four unearned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Zizzi went a third of an inning and allowed six runs, three earned, with three hits and two walks. Bates went an inning allowing an unearned run and a hit with two strikeouts.

Oriskany plays a non-league game at 4:30 p.m. on April 15 at Adirondack.

New York Mills hosts Madison at 4:30 p.m. Friday in non-league play.
