Five arrested following melee involving dozens in Utica, police officials report

A large fight involving upwards of 70 people broke out on Lenox Avenue in Utica very early Thursday morning, resulting in several people in custody.

Police said they were called to the 900 block on the city’s west side for a disorderly house party at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday. When the first officer arrived, authorities said he found about 70 to 80 people in the roadway starting to fight. The officer attempted to disperse the crowd, but authorities said several people began to approach and threaten him.

The officer tried to use pepper spray against the encroaching crowd and it had minimal effect, police stated. The fight continued to escalate, with several people grabbing baseball bats and starting to fight among themselves.

Back-up eventually arrived, including help from law enforcement agencies outside the city, and police were able to bring the brawl under control.

Five Utica residents were taken into custody in the fight: Gloria Grant, age 24; Crystal Hinson, age 33; Manya Shelton, age 26; Nyala Wilson, age 27, and Nakia Wilson, age 25, authorities said. The five of them are facing charges including harassment towards an officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, police stated. All five are scheduled to appear in court.

Police said the incident remains under investigation.

More charges are possible.
