TOWN OF FRANKFORT — A series of fires at the former CharlesTown mall building at the border of Frankfort and Utica have been ruled suspicious, according to fire officials.

Frankfort Center Fire Chief David Miller said there were multiple fires set inside the old, abandoned building on Turner Street sometime on Tuesday. A passerby discovered the smoke and flames and called 9-1-1 at about 7 p.m.

“We had several different points of origin, fire in different parts of the building,” Miller explained.

Volunteers from five departments doused the multiple fires in about an hour and a half, the chief said. No one was injured. Crews remained on the scene for another five to six hours dousing hot spots and cleaning up. Miller said the building had once been a factory, then a department store, but has lain vacant for years.

“The cause is under investigation, but it’s suspicious” because of the multiple points of origin, Miller stated.

The Frankfort Center, Frankfort, Frankfort Hill, Schuyler and Utica fire departments
responded.
