ROME — Despite what they show in the movies, reviving an unresponsive person through CPR is very rarely successful. It only happens in about 2% of cases, according to the Mid-State Regional EMS Council.

Which is why four members of the Rome Fire Department and three EMTs from AmCare Ambulance were recognized Wednesday morning for successfully reviving an ailing Rome resident last week. Mid-State EMS presented all seven with a Certificate of Recognition.

“Cardiac arrests that result in a positive outcome don’t happen often. Nationally, it’s only about a 2% rate that it’s successful,” said Vincent Ouimette, program agency director for Midstate EMS with Mid-State EMS.

“We recognize providers when we can.”

On May 16, Rome Fire and AmCare Ambulance were dispatched to a woman suffering a diabetic emergency in the City of Rome, officials said. Through CPR, use of defibrillators and airway management, the rescue personnel were able to revive the woman before she left her home and was eventually taken to University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment.

Those recognized for their lifesaving efforts are:

• Rome Fire Lt. Dean Lenhart;
• Firefighter Kyle Liddy;
• Firefighter Todd Stevens;
• Firefighter Phil Urtz;
• AmCare Ambulance President and Paramedic Paul Taylor;
• AmCare Critical Care specialist Melissa Norrs; and
• AmCare EMT Zachary Capron.

“It’s nice to have good patient outcomes like this,” said Taylor. “It’s not real common that we get a really good outcome like this. So these guys really deserve the credit.”
