UTICA — No one was injured when a vacant home on Park Avenue in Utica was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning, according to the Utica Fire Department.

Many residents and agencies in and around the City of Utica also reported heavy smoke conditions as winds spread the thick, acrid smoke.

Fire officials said the alarm was raised for a fully involved structure fire at 1121 Park Ave. at 7:54 a.m. The two-story residence is located just southeast of downtown, with black smoke reportedly rising above nearby Genesee Street.

"We had fire on the first and second floors, and the attic, when we arrived," said Utica Fire Chief Scott Ingersoll.

Utica firefighters responded to the scene and launched an exterior attack, following an initial interior search. Ingersoll said the home is vacant, and his firefighters encountered a lot of debris inside the home.

"The volume of fire, and we had some hoarding-like conditions inside. So there were quite a few things in there that hindered our operations," Ingersoll stated.

Crews fought both an interior and exterior attack before Ingersoll said everyone was pulled out of the residence for fear of structural collapse. He said the roof and the chimney both eventually collapsed. No firefighters were hurt.

The flames took about 80 minutes to get under control, the chief said. Crews remained on the scene throughout the morning dousing hot spots and cleaning up.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Ingersoll noted.
