Firefighters battle flames, frigid cold in Herkimer County blaze
FRANKFORT — One family has been displaced after a garage fire spread to their home on First Avenue in Herkimer County very early Friday morning, according to the authorities.
The alarm was raised at about 1:30 a.m. for a fully-involved garage fire at 229 First Ave. Volunteers from seven local departments responded in the bitter cold to battle the blaze. Authorities said heavy winds caused the flames to spread from the attached garage to the residence.
Authorities said all residents escaped the home without injury. The firefighters battled for about an hour before the fire was under control.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Frankfort, Ilion, Schuyler, Mohawk, East Herkimer, Frankfort Center and Richfield Springs fire departments responded.
