Fire leaves 11 homeless in Utica; Red Cross assisting victims

Eleven people were displaced, including three children, following a fire in a multi-family building in Utica very early Monday morning. Fire officials said the fire started in the garage at 1213 Oswego St. and spread to the 2 1/2-story residence. The alarm was raised at 2:30 a.m. Eleven residents, including three children, ages 4, 6 and 17, escaped the home without injury, authorities said.

Firefighters worked for several hours to control the blaze. Authorities said a neighboring residence, and other area garages, sustained some smoke, heat and fire damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross is assisting all 11 residents with shelter, food and clothing.
