Fire destroys lean-to at Alger Island campsite

WEBB — An unattended fire is to blame for burning down a lean-to on Alger Island in Herkimer County, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The caretaker of Alger Island notified state forest rangers at about 6:15 a.m. Aug. 2 for a lean-to on fire on the island on the southern end of Fourth Lake. Forest rangers and the Old Forge Fire Department responded and had the fire under control within half an hour, though the structure was a total loss, authorities said.

The area was blocked off and the fire was declared fully out the following afternoon.

Authorities said the fire began when an unattended fire spread to the structure. Forest rangers remind all campers to not leave fires unattended because wind can spread the sparks, embers and flames. All campfires should be drowned in water when finished, officials advised.
