Five corrections officers sent to hospital after inmate starts fire in cell

MARCY — Five corrections officers were hospitalized with smoke inhalation after a mental health inmate started a fire in his cell at the Marcy Correctional Facility early Wednesday morning, according to the state Department of Corrections.

State officials said an inmate housed in the Regional Mental Health Unit lit a fire in his cell shortly before 8 a.m. Officials said onsite staff responded quickly to evacuate the housing unit and extinguish the fire.

About five corrections officers suffered smoke inhalation and officials said they were taken to local hospitals for treatment. The inmate was also taken to a local hospital for evaluation. The identity of the inmate was not released.

Officials said the incident remains under investigation.
