HERKIMER — A Herkimer County man and his two teenage children are all facing charges after a large fight on King Street in the village in early April, according to the Herkimer Police Department.

Police said they were dispatched to the 200 block of King St. around 8 p.m. April 1 for a large fight involving 30 to 40 people. While officers attempted to break up the fracas, they said the crowd grew to 50 to 60 people, and there were reports that a juvenile in the crowd had a handgun.

People in the fight started shoving the officers and grabbing at their weapons, including a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, police said. The two teens were making threats towards the officers and encouraging others to join in, authorities said.

The 16-year-old also struck an officer who was assisting another person in the crowd.

The officers repeatedly advised 61-year-old Clayton "Corky" Sheffler, of Herkimer, to get his children under control, police said, and he would not do it.

The crowd was eventually dispersed and injuries were treated, authorities said. An investigation into the family revealed that the teenagers had had numerous encounters with law enforcement over the past year. Police officials said they consulted with multiple county agencies, including the District Attorney's Office and Child Protective Services, as part of their investigation.

This week, the teenagers were charged with second-degree obstruction of a governmental administration, and they were ticketed to appear before Herkimer County Family Court, police said. Sheffler is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, authorities stated. He is scheduled to appear in court.
