CANASTOTA — La Bamba MTZ is now open in Canastota and serving authentic Mexican cuisine.
A family-owned business, La Bamba MTZ gave Canastota residents a taste for what was to come the day before opening on Oct. 25.
“They weren’t ready to open [on Saturday, Oct. 24] but they invited us in and let us try some food for free, which was really nice especially in this day and age,” Susannah Wright, of south Syracuse, said. “The food was delicious. And it’s authentic — it’s what’s needed [in Canastota].”
Owner Karina Martinez and her family moved from southern California to New York after a family visit about a year ago.
“We came to visit an aunt I have and we fell in love with the nature,” Martinez said. “In California, it’s all city where we lived.”
The move became official, Martinez said, when the family realized there wasn’t any good authentic Mexican food in the area. “We said to each other that we should open a restaurant,” she said.
Martinez said the move has been good and she was surprised by just how well the neighbors have welcomed her and her family.
“They’ve all been amazing,” she said. “We’ve gotten flowers from Sandy Passante [of Sandy’s
Flowers and Gifts] and Marlene [Parlow of Cakes and Other Goodies] has been great as well.”
The move comes amidst the pandemic and despite it, Martinez said it’s been alright so far.
“It’s been a little bit of a concern, but we’re just hoping everything goes well,” she said.
With its doors ready to open, La Bamba MTZ already had a line forming of people looking to try it for the first time.
La Bamba MTZ also offers takeout and delivery via DoorDash and GrubHub. The menu features a number of authentic Mexican dishes, from the staple tacos and tamales to huarache, pozole, milanesa, and more.
“The village of Canastota is so happy that we have a new business offering new food options in our downtown,” Canastota Mayor Rosanne Warner said. “The residents of Canastota welcome La Bamba MTZ — a family-owned business — to our community and we wish them great success for years to come.”
La Bamba MTZ is located at 139 S. Peterboro St. in Canastota. For more information, call 909-285-7823.
