UTICA — An electrical issue on the outside of a residence on Buchanan Road in Utica Thursday afternoon has displaced four people from their home, according to the Utica Fire Department.

Fire officials said the alarm was raised at 3:52 p.m. Thursday for a fire on the outside of 408 Buchanan Road, on the city's north side. Responding firefighters found smoke and fire spreading up and into the second-floor bedroom from the outside wall. Buchanan Road branches north off Riverside Drive.

Several firefighters went inside to search the home and place tarps over the residents' property to protect it from fire and water, while other crews used hose lines to attack the flames from outside and in, officials said. The fire was declared under control within an hour.

Before firefighters arrived, authorities said several neighbors helped the four residents and their pets escape.

One resident was treated for smoke inhalation, officials said, with no other injuries. Three adults and one 7-year-old child were displaced from the home and are being offered shelter, food and clothing by the American Red Cross.

The fire was caused by an electrical issue on the outside of the residence, department officials said. The damage was contained to the exterior siding, a first-floor bathroom, a second-floor bedroom and part of the roof.
