Events planned to mark Italian Heritage Month

UTICA — Italian Heritage Club of the Mohawk Valley will observe Italian Heritage Month in October with several different events held throughout Oneida and Herkimer counties.

Oneida County History Center, 1608 Genesee St., will host an Italian Heritage Exhibit from Oct. 10-31. It will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. days the museum is open.

Other Italian Heritage Month events:

• Monday, Oct. 3: 3 pm. flag raising at Utica City Hall. Coro Italiano will sing the National Anthem, followed by the Italian anthem. There will be a proclamation by Mayor Robert M. Palmieri.

Members Bob Dellecese and Joseph Nesci will serve as honorary flag raisers.

• Tuesday, Oct. 4: 10 a.m. flag raising at Rome City Hall with Coro Italiano singing the National Anthem and Italian anthem. There will be a proclamation by Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo, and honorary flag raisers will be members of the Ferlo Bakery family. The bakery was established in Rome in 1896.

• Wednesday, Oct. 5: 4 p.m. flag raising at Herkimer County Office Building, 109 Mary St., Herkimer. It will be the first Italian flag raising in Herkimer County.

A proclamation will be presented by Herkimer County Board of Legislators Chairman Vincent Bono. Coro Italiano will sing the National and Italian anthems. Honorary flag raisers will be Dominick DeSimone and Herkimer County Legislator Peter Manno.

An inaugural flag raising reception hosted by IHCMV will follow in the Herkimer County Legislative Chambers.

• Saturday, Oct. 8: 1 p.m. wreath laying at Italian Community Bake Oven (built in 1891) in Little Falls, located on Loomis Street and Route 167N off Route 5. Listed on the New York State and National Register of Historic Places, a reception will follow the ceremony at Little Falls Public Library, hosted by IHCMV and Preserve Our Past, Inc.

• Saturday, Oct. 15: 2 p.m. Coro Italiano will perform at Oneida County History Center, 1608 Genesee St. in Utica. A reception hosted by IHCMV will follow at 3 p.m.

• Thursday, Oct. 27: There will be the program Unable Passeggiata a Torino with advanced registration of $40. For more information or to make a reservation, call 315-733-6106.
