ORISKANY — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County will host a free event, ‘Buying Local Meats in Bulk: Tips to Maximize Your Local Meat Purchasing Power,’ at its offices at 121 Second St. at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29.

The event, in conjunction with the New York Beef Council, is designed to help consumers beef up their meat purchasing power and share a host of information on local meat purchasing.

Those interested in attending the workshop can register online at https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/BLM2022_230

“Today shopping for meats at the store can be a stressful task with worries about what is available and how much it will cost at checkout,” the agency said in its program announcement. “With the nation facing an inflation rate that is at an eight-year high, who isn’t trying to make their food budget go further?”

“The idea of purchasing local meats has become more popular due to the shutdowns of meat processing facilities during the pandemic. The shutdowns highlighted how quickly the supply chain could be affected. The shortages have pushed consumers to think ‘closer to home’ when making meat purchases,” the announcement added. “Purchasing local meats allows consumers to have a sense of control. Knowing where their product comes from and to who their money is going. But the idea of purchasing meat locally can seem unattainable when you only see the chain grocery stores for meat purchasing.”
