A “Battle of the Colleges” Esports tournament will be held Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium, featuring colleges competing in “Rocket League” and “Super Smash Bros.” tournaments for a chance to win up to $5,000.
The event also will include several vendors featuring video games, comic books, toys, art, and more. Tickets are available for $10 through the Adirondack Bank Center box office, or online at www.empirestatetix.com, or by calling 315-790-9070.
The event will be hosted by Alpha North Esports & Entertainment of British Columbia, Canada. The process for the tournament began with Alpha North hosting “Rocket League” preliminary rounds online on GamerzArena between Jan. 17-19, according to an Alpha North announcement.
Among participating colleges:
• For “Rocket League” — Penn State; Syracuse University; University of Rochester; Farmingdale State; Molloy College (“Rocket League”/ “Smash Bros. Ultimate”); LIU Post; Randolph Macon College.
• For “Smash Bros. Ultimate” — Juniata College; Central Connecticut College; SUNY Canton; SUNY Potsdam; Elmira College.
“Rocket League” is a sport-based video game, likened to “soccer with cars,” and was developed by Psyonix, said Alpha North.
It features a competitive game mode based on teamwork and outmaneuvering opponents. Players work with their team to advance the ball downfield, and score goals in their opponents’ net.
“Super Smash Bros.” is a series of crossover fighting video games published by Nintendo, featuring characters, places and items from various Nintendo series. The objective for a player is to score more eliminations than opponents, including knocking opponents off screen.
