The Empire 8 Conference is expanding the fields for postseason tournaments for five sports beginning this season.

The NCAA Division III conference said postseason tournaments for men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball will have six teams and softball will have five teams.

The change was voted on by the league’s athletic directors and approved by the Empire 8 President’s Council, according to a news release. The limited expansion is the second non-emergent growth in the conference’s 24-year history as a multi-sport conference, the Empire 8 noted.

In 2020, the Empire 8 added Keuka College as a ninth member and with the addition of Medaille University for the 2022-23 season, conference includes 10 full members. That’s the largest in history, the release noted, and led to postseason expansion.

The Empire 8 also includes full members Utica University, Alfred University, Elmira College, Hartwick College, Houghton University, Nazareth College, Russell Sage College, St. John Fisher University.

There are also affiliate members in SUNY Brockport, SUNY Cortland, Washington & Jefferson and SUNY Oswego.

Postseason season tournaments for the 2022-23 season are expanding for men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball, as each sport features the maximum 10 teams.

The softball tournament will expand to five teams as nine schools compete. Baseball, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s tennis remain as four-team championship tournaments.

“While only one team will earn our automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament and we may earn at-large selections, Empire 8 Championships create lifelong memories and serve as the ultimate accomplishment for all competitors,” Empire 8 Commissioner Chuck Mitrano said in the release.
